Mexican-American community to celebrate Diez y Seis
The Mexican-American community is gearing up to celebrate Mexico’s bicentennial anniversary of its independence from Spain, Diez y Seis de Septiembre.
The event, hosted by the City of Austin, the Mexican Consulate and the Fiesta de Independencia Foundation, will feature art, music and performances all at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center.
Organizers said it's a rich cultural celebration of everything Mexican.
"We celebrate 200 years of proudly being Mexican. We also celebrate all the values, the ideas, of which the foundation Mexican is based on," Rodrigo Alcocer, of the Mexican Consulate, said.
Events include music by Mexican composers performed by a quintet from the Austin Symphony, a re-enactment of Father Miguel Hidalgo's 1810 call for independence, a commemorative poster by Austin artist Fidencio Duran and much more.
The celebration happens Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 6:30-10 p.m. at the MACC, located at 600 River Street. The event is free and open to the public.
