Since News 8 aired this story, Southwestern University officials reported a room has been reserved for a debate at their facilities.

The heat is on for District 52 State House candidates Democratic incumbent Diana Maldonado and Republican challenger Larry Gonzales.

While both politicians talk to voters about their strengths, both say the people deserve to see them side-by-side in a debate.

“We keep hearing there's one scheduled. No one has contacted us," Gonzales said.

Gonzales said Maldonado doesn't want to do any unscripted debates.

"It's a misstatement on his part," Maldonado said.

Maldonado admits she prefers less divisive forum settings, but she is willing to participate in an unscripted debate.

"I've done debates before in prior elections, I've done forums before and that's not something new to my campaign," she said.

Maldonado is trying to keep the seat she won in 2008. It was the first time a Democrat held the position in 16 years.

While some say she was simply riding the 'Obama wave,' Maldonado said she's proven herself in her first term.

"During the first term, I secured $27 million for the district when it comes to transportation and higher ed," she said.

Gonzales said he's no stranger to the Capitol. He's worked as a staff member for several state leaders.

"I was there for redistricting last time. I was there for the budget last time. I have a road map for what has worked, for what hasn't worked," he said.

Maldonado said a debate on education has been scheduled at Southwestern University in Georgetown. Her campaign staff said it had been on the schedule for weeks.
