UT's alert system applauded after shooting

The sounds of sirens echoed across campus Tuesday morning, but even students who didn't hear the audible alarm were notified via text message and over the Internet.
The University of Texas’ emergency alert system includes sirens, text messages and social media.
"I was on Facebook and Twitter and watching TV and getting text. I may have brought it upon myself,” senior Julia Meter said.
Meter said she believes her school did everything they could to raise the immediate concern of danger.
"It was good. In a situation like this you want as much information as possible," she said.
Campus officials say 53,000 people were notified with little to no mistakes. They will take nothing for granted.
"The only lesson I would have to say we have to learn is that as technology progresses and our audiences choose different communication channels, we have to choose those channels too and be prepared to use them in a crisis," UT's Communication Director Rhonda Weldon said.
In August, university police hosted a multi-agency exercise to prepare for an emergency like Tuesday’s shooting. UT Chief of Police Robert Dahlstrom said he believes that exercise allowed the campus to prepare for the worst.
"We will do everything we can to learn any mistakes we made, and I am sure we did, and we'll try and improve on those," he said.
It's a real-life exercise no campus ever wants to face, but officials stress preparedness is key to keep as many people safe on one of the largest campuses in the country.
