The steaming temperatures and dry conditions have more people turning to alternative ways to keep their grass green.

For Austin resident Terry Tannert, the drought has made maintaining her front yard extra difficult this year.

"You just have to always have to think about what is going to survive in the hot sun," she said. ''I've changed to pots and I hand water every evening, really I have to do it every day."

Facing these types of conditions, many lawn lovers are using alternative options to grass. According to Mark Harkrider with Forever Lawn Austin, synthetic grass is gaining some real turf.

"The drought has had a huge effect on the popularity of the product and really in the last two years we've seen a dramatic increase in the use here in Central Texas," he said. "Every time we put it in a setting, whether its animals, children or even grownups, the first thing they want to do is walk on it, feel it and touch it."

According to Harkrider, the cost of synthetic grass can be $6 to $12 per square foot, depending on the quality.

"Within a three to five year period, you can recoup the cost of your investment and that would be dependent on the level of care you give to your yard,” he said.

There are different types of turf that can be used in places like playgrounds or in yards that have pets.
