City council to decide on liquor license for Cedar Door

By: News 8 Austin Staff

It's the fourth move in 26 years for the Cedar Door. Like Ruta Maya or Ego's, it's a homegrown hangout that's truly Austin.

Property development at Lamar and Cesar Chavez terminated the bar's lease at the beginning of the year and sent it looking for a new home. It found one in South Austin, in the Pecan Grove RV Park.

But in order to legally sell liquor at this new location, the bar owner had to request a zoning change. But on Tuesday night, the Zoning and Planning Commission forwarded the request to the city council without a recommendation.

The Cedar Door needs a waiver from city council, since there is a private school and daycare in the neighborhood, and city code prohibits the sale of alcohol within 300 feet. The Parkside Community School is opposed to the bar moving into the neighborhood.
