The Lower Colorado River Authority is asking Spicewood Beach water system customers to only bathe on “special occasions.”
In a letter from the LCRA, dated Feb. 1, the river authority also asks customers of the Burnet County water system to take short showers, install low-flow showerheads and only run washers and dishwashers when they are absolutely full, among other water conservation tips.
"They're giving us these guidelines now that they are saying that we need go by to conserve water," Spicewood Beach resident Kathy Mull said.
The urgency comes after LCRA enacted Stage 4 water restrictions for the area last month, when the community’s wells began drying up at a rapid rate. Earlier this week, LCRA began trucking in water to fill the community's water tank. Officials have said customers will not be charged for the additional cost of trucking the water.
Community members have been upset with LCRA's management of the water system, saying the river authority should never have sold water to contractors during the current drought. In 2011 LCRA sold a total of 47 million gallons of water from the Spicewood Beach and Western Travis County water supplies to 29 different contractors.
For Mull, she’s still wondering what qualifies as a “special occasion.”
"It's not to go to church because that's not a special occasion if you're going to church every day,” Mull said. “Is it if you're going to invite friends over to get in a tub, light candles? Is that a special occasion? We want to know what their special occasion is to us in Spicewood Beach that we can't take a bath now."
The LCRA is also offering vouchers for high efficiency toilets for homes built before 1996 in the Spicewood Beach system, according to the letter.
