Republican Rep. Ron Paul's U.S. Congressional seat will be a hot item in the upcoming election season.

The Libertarian-leaning congressman’s decision to retire in order to focus on his presidential run has opened the door to a growing cast of candidates hoping to take over District 14, along the southeastern coast of Texas.

Bill Sargent touts his history in the military as a major qualification for Paul’s seat, now up for grabs.

“I bring to the table congressional experience,” he said. “I bring to the table the fact that I’m a retired veteran, the only retired veteran in the race.”

Felicia Harris wants voters to know that she has a long track record in the legal world and has experience in the big industries represented in District 14.

“I spent the last 13 years working with employers and employees who work in those industries, specifically the energy and the petro-chemical industry,” she said.

As for business integrity, District 14 candidate Tim Day says he’s run the gamut.

“I’ve dealt with homeless people to billionaires,” Day said. "That’s what separates me.”

They are three diverse candidates in a quickly-crowding pool of hopefuls. As of Friday, 12 Republicans share the ballot with one Democrat and two Libertarian candidates.

The seat has been held by Rep. Paul since 1997, but last summer, he announced that he would not be seeking re-election, telling the local newspaper he did not want to juggle two campaigns going into November’s election.

People still interested in running still have the opportunity to file. Due to the current redistricting debacle, there is no deadline in place.
