Bystander killed in South Austin police pursuit

One motorist is dead and a suspected car thief has been arrested after a collision in South Austin Friday afternoon.
Police chased a man in what they thought was a stolen pickup truck from Barton Creek Square Mall east on Ben White Boulevard. At the intersection with Packsaddle Pass, the truck struck a car and killed the driver.
Police arrested the driver of the truck, but say the case goes far beyond a possible car theft.
"The suspect's actions were deliberate and violent and offensive to our community, and we are intending to pursue murder charges against the suspect who is in custody," APD Lt. Fred Fletcher said.
Investigators haven't released any information about the person who was killed.
