The group Texas Uniting for Reform and Freedom—or TURF—gathered on the State Capitol’s south steps in protest of toll roads Tuesday morning.
The TURF members asked Texas leaders to stop incurring more debt and to stop paying incentives for major events.
Grassroots America Executive Director JoAnn Fleming says state tax dollars should not be used as bait to lure outside companies to Texas.
"We think that we have a good tax climate here. We think that we have a great state,” Fleming said. “It’s already attractive to come to Texas. We don't think you have to pay tax dollars out to make them get here."
The group wants to do away with public-private partnerships and return to pay-as-you-go road financing.
Earlier this year, TxDOT Executive Director Phil Wilson said his agency needed an additional $4 billion a year for road maintenance and construction.
