In the U.S., there are approximately 300,000 cases of the auti-immune disease scleroderma, but experts say that number is likely much higher due to people going undiagnosed.
Scleroderma is a condition where the body produces too much collagen. It can cause blotchy red spots on the face, hands to be deform and in some cases effect vital organs.
"It's a disease not just of the skin,” rheumatologist Dr. Lee Shapiro said. “It's a disease in which there can be fibrosis internally, the heart, the lungs and any part of the GI track."
A common symptom of scleroderma is a condition called Reynaud’s. Symptoms that may indicate the heart and or lungs are involved is fatigue and shortness of breath.
