Sarah Shrader's heart-felt passion is spelled out on her Head for the Cure t-shirt. Head for the Cure is the name of a 5K for brain cancer research.
Shrader lost her dad to the disease, but now she's fighting back one step at a time.
“After he passed away, I started looking for a way to carry on his fight and support others who are fighting the disease,” she said. “I want to bring a 5K to Austin.”
She did just that, and along the way brought a new awareness about brain tumors.
Dr. Morris Groves heads up the two-year-old Austin Brain Tumor Center. Before now, people had few options for treatment.
“If a patient has a tumor in El Paso or Tyler or Dallas or Houston for that matter, they can come here,” Dr. Groves said.
Dr. Groves says there are fewer cases of tumors actually starting in the brain.
“That only makes up about two percent of all cancers,” he said. So they don't get the same attention as breast or other cancers. Dr. Groves is changing that with several experimental treatments in the works.
They take the fight against brain cancer right to the mutation.
“The goal is nothing less than absolutely stopping the tumors from growing,” Dr. Groves said.
Shrader said that on March 17th, she'll be running for her dad and all those taking steps against this deadly disease.
Austin's inaugural Head for the Cure 5K is coming up on March 17th at Camp Mabry.
