Race Organizer Andrea Fisher says she and her husband are dog people and started the event as a way for their dogs to participate.

“Sunset Valley which is just a couple of miles south of downtown Austin was always known for the donkeys that we have at our residence,” she said. “It’s kind of the adopted mascot for the city down there.”

Course record holder David Fuentes ran the course in14 minutes and 54 seconds. He said the course is nice, flat and fast.

“It’s actually one of the fastest courses in Austin. A lot of people run the same loop around Cesar Chavez and so forth and it gives people a chance to get away from downtown and run through Sunset Valley,” he said.

Dogs also get bib numbers, chips and compete in age categories for awards.

The event benefits Sunset Valley Elementary, and will be held Oct. 20.
