If you aren't sure how well your phone will work with wireless carriers outside the U.S., here are two apps that can help simplify your trip whether you have access to data or not. The first is CoPilot Live Premium. By now you're probably well aware of how a GPS app works for driving and finding points of interest. But, a big advantage of this one is the maps can all be stored within your phone so you don't need a data connection. That’s great if you aren't getting a signal wherever you happen to be or if you are paying a fortune for data services. The pricing on this one gets a big confusing based on which features you want. CoPilot Live Premium USA is a good place to start. It gets you maps of the U.S. for $9.99. After that, individual countries can cost anywhere from about $5 to $30 or you can buy map packs, like all Europe for $33.99. CoPilot Live Premium is right now available for iOS, Android, and Windows phones.
The same basic premise goes for Jibbigo. Just like most language translation tools, if you have a data connection you can, for free, talk or type in what you want to say in one language and it gets spit out in another. Most others though ONLY work with a data connection. With Jibbigo, again for a fee, you can download certain languages that get stored locally on your phone. That way you can use the tool whether you have service or not. Jibbigo is a free app. For offline use it costs from $2.99 to $3.99 per language, $9.99 for an Asian or European bundle or $24.99 for the World bundle.
