Though it's certainly not the first and won't be the last, Samsung's launch of a smartwatch may officially begin what could be the next "it" category of consumer electronics.
It doesn't hurt that Apple is expected to also unveil one at any moment.
As for Samsung though, its smartwatch is called the "Galaxy Gear." At the moment , the only phone the Galaxy Gear links with is the Galaxy Note 3, which Samsung also just unveiled.
Smart watches have been launched several times before, so does this one offer enough to finally make this category stick?
"Maybe this is the start, I feel like this is a little bit like Google Glass. This isn't the ultimate, not the end, it's the beginning, and maybe this is the first real practical smart watch," says Lance Ulanoff from Mashable.com
The Galaxy Gear and the Galaxy Note 3 both go on sale Sept. 25.
The watch will cost about $300, though the price for the phone hasn't yet been announced.
