We’ve all heard old wives tales but are they true?

From sniffles to stuffiness to nausea, we’re all under attack by cold and flu season. Can you protect yourself with old wives’ tales? Old wives’ tales have been passed on for generations.

We break down those truths and myths below:

Does having wet hair in cold weather make you sick? No, researchers have found it does not make you more susceptible to viruses.

Should you feed a cold and feed flu? Sometimes, you need healthy food to boost your immune system and fight off a cold. You also need energy to fight off an infection that causes fever.

Does eating chicken soup help you when you’re sick? Yes, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center found chicken soup packed with veggies helps reduce inflammation that causes cold symptoms like runny nose and congestion.

Another old wives’ tale is that you need to do nothing but rest when you’re sick. Researchers at Ball State University found exercising 30 minutes a day can actually help you feel better when you have a cold, but don’t overdo it, working out more than 90 minutes can weaken your immune system.
