NYC Map

It's a map of big cities the way most tourists and, frankly, even locals probably prefer to see it: Not as just street names and buildings but instead, each block is made up of the restaurants, stores, or hotels that are on it.

App developer CityMaps has done it for San Francisco and Austin and now it's teamed up with the official tourist board of New York City to make one for the Big Apple called NYC Map. You can either see all retailers throughout the city or filter down to just restaurants, just hotels, etc.

Once you see something you like you click on it to drill down for more information, you can even check in there through Foursquare, if it's a restaurant make reservations through OpenTable.

There's two other neat map features. First, you can also check out the map for Tweets made near you or around a neighborhood where you're standing to possibly get an idea for what's happening there at the moment and second. You can also hit a deals button which will show you a bunch of bargains available around you.

NYC Map is a free app right now for just for iOS devices.

IndieBound Reader

A new app called IndieBound Reader is helping book lovers shop local in this increasingly digital world. It's a dilemma you want to go digital but you don't want to contribute to your local mom and pop bookstore going out of business.

Well IndieBound Reader is a way to buy eBooks from your local mom and pop bookstore. The American Booksellers Association put together the app as a way for independent stores to sell Google eBooks online.

You log on, type in a zip code, and then up pops a bunch of local book stores. You then choose one and shop away and anything you purchase gets purchased from your local store. And while the IndieBound Reader is a free app for Android and iOS devices, only the Android version allows you to purchase and then read books straight through the app.

The iOS version is more of a reader for these books meaning it's more complicated, you will have to go out through your browser and buy books through your local store's website and then import them into the app.
