cars can be seen all over town.
Billy Grogan is a car2go member in town for a quick business trip.
"I've been coming here for five years and I never rent a car, everything's so convenient downtown, you can walk or rent one of these," Grogan said. "I wish more cities that I travel to had these, it would be really nice."
Grogan says using a car2go is a much better deal than taking a cab. Most places around town have special car2go parking spots, but you can park them anywhere.
Car2gos cost one-time fee of $35 and $0.35 a minute. The car charges members through a wireless connection located on the front left window.
"You have to log out of the car when you get out, so you just swipe your card on the reader here and it ends the rental for you," Grogan said.
Some 20,000 Austinites have already signed up for the car2go program. Member Katie Stafford says the program offers a less complex version of public transportation.
"Moving to Austin, it's more of a modern American city. You have so many different ways of getting around town. You have CapMetro, you have people who bike or walk, car2go is just another option for getting from one place to another," she said.
And for those who think it’s too hard to learn, car2go offers a tutorial video for members to reap the full benefits of the car sharing program.
Another perk is drivers don’t have to worry about gas. Inside the car, you can find a gas card and if you fill up the tank, the company gives you 20 free minutes of drive time.
Automotively Austin continues tomorrow with a look at high-end car sales.
