The Capital City's fashion world is abuzz for the fourth annual Austin Fashion Week.
For many up-and-coming designers, the road to the runway requires them to plug away behind the scenes. For designers like Jordan Martin, it all starts with an idea.
“Quite a bit of work went into this one, with the low back. You have to think about, is it going to be bra friendly? Women want to feel like they're being supported," she said. “You have to think about, is this person going to be dancing in this, are they going to be eating in this, running around, are they going to be working in this?”
With the popularity of television and reality shows like Project Runway, those at the Austin School of Fashion Design say they've seen increased interest in both fashion design and sewing.
"It's just the pendulum of history, going back and forth. Now we're going back to being cozy in our houses again," Austin School of Fashion Design spokesperson Mary Margaret Quadlander said.
For independent designers like Martin, who not only create, but also have to think about manufacturing and marketing their garments, she said, "Some days when you're thinking about color palettes and everything is beautiful, and then there are days when you have to pay the bills and you want to cry."
In the end, it's time spent sowing the seeds of fashion which helps reap its own rewards.
"It's almost like, having a child. I've worked so hard and spent so much time on it, this is my artistic expression, and here it is realized and materialized and it's a very odd feeling," Martin said.
The Austin School of Fashion Design offers sewing classes for all levels. School officials say hundreds of children signed up for the sewing summer camp this year. For a list of classes, visit their website at asfdesigns.com.
