Bulbs are great in the landscape but they're also great during the cool season to brighten up the indoors or even the patio outdoors around your home.

You can take a few bulbs and place them in a shallow container full of some pebbles with a little water in it. They'll grow up and bloom from right inside your home.

Another great way to do that is to use one of the bulb containers. Put some water in it and the roots will grow out of the bottom of the bulb. It will bloom for you in just a matter of a few weeks.

I also like to place bulbs in a container like a large terracotta pot. Put a little rye grass in around the bottom to add filler--put a little soil in it and they'll be up in no time. The fragrance is wonderful.

Larger bulbs like amaryllis also work very well, both in a large container for forcing or even placed in a pot.

Bulbs also make a nice gift and a great way to beautify the landscape, both outside your home on the patio, or indoors.

Out in the Garden can be seen each Saturday morning. Austin Area Garden Council President Donna Friedenreich offers a journey through area gardens, like the Zilker Botanical Garden. She offers advice on what and when to plant from flowers to herbs and more.
