You don't have to get very far into a long, hot Texas summer before those water bills begin to skyrocket.

Here are a few devices that are very important and can save you money on your water bills.

• Rain switch

Whenever it rains, this device turns your system off automatically. Then, a few days after the rain stops and it begins to dry out, it turns the system on again. You'll never have sprinklers running in the rain again.

• Hose end controller

These are simple valves that turn your hose on and off. You can set them to come on and off at the right time. Some are even programmable so you can have them come on a future day and turn off. They'll save you money in the long run.

• Convert sprinkler system to drip

Remove the sprinkler head and put a cap on it. It has several holes in the bottom. You attach a tube to these holes and each runs to a drip emitter somewhere in the bed.

• Drip irrigation kit

These attach to a hose end and you simply turn them on and, again, drip water right where it needs it, a very efficient system and an easy conversion that anyone can do.

If you use a sprinkler, skip says Half an inch to one inch of water per week is enough to keep your lawn healthy.

Out in the Garden can be seen each Saturday morning. Austin Area Garden Council President Donna Friedenreich offers a journey through area gardens, like the Zilker Botanical Garden. She offers advice on what and when to plant from flowers to herbs and more.
