If you're trying to stretch every dollar and cent, the grocery store maybe the first place to do it.

Coupons

Coupons are a great way to save, but if you don't see ones for the products you like, consider joining E-Coupons.com's Trading Club. You can mail in your unwanted coupons and then go online to find the ones you want from other traders like you.

  • Get more bang for your buck in the produce department by going green. The darker green a veggie is, the higher its nutritional content. Romaine lettuce has six times more vitamin C and five times more beta-carotene than iceberg lettuce.
  • Instead of reaching for that jug of juice, hit the frozen food aisle. Juice concentrates cost half as much as regular juice and contain all the nutritional value. Just make sure the label states, "100 percent juice."
  • You can also save by making your food stay fresher longer. Need just a few drops of lemon juice? Don't make squeeze the whole fruit. Instead, use a toothpick to make a small hole and squeeze out only what you need.
  • Keep cottage cheese fresher longer by storing it upside down in the fridge. This keeps the surface area from being exposed to air, preventing mold from developing.

Every Monday and Thursday YNN's Jennifer Borget offers lifestyle reports that help families make decisions about careers, finances, nutrition, fitness and parenting with our Smart Living.
