Summertime is here, the temperature is up and now is about the time when people start thinking about putting in a pool. It’s cool, it’s refreshing, but it’s also a big investment with some risk if you aren’t prepared.
News 8 talks with Merissa Gabrysch with the Better Business Bureau about how to keep your dreams from turning into nightmares.
You can start the search with over 100 trustworthy pool companies on the BBB Member Pages site. Click on the name of the business listed under the "Swimming Pool Contractors, Dealers, Design" section to view their BBB Reliability Report.
Once you narrow your search, get at least three bids from your favorite companies, but make sure they’re all based on the same materials, labor and time. Remember, you get what you pay for. The cheapest pool may be the cheapest quality too.
Always ask for a list of satisfied customers and call every one of them to see just how satisfied they really are with their pool. If they’re not having fun in the sun, neither will you.
After you decide on the right contractor, make sure they have the required insurance and licensure. Check with the city regarding permits or other requirements.
While a contractor may require a down payment, avoid paying for the entire project up front. Pay by credit card or check and keep your credit card or bank statement to record payments.
If possible, arrange a payment plan contingent upon delivery of materials or completion of a defined amount of work. Make sure you are satisfied with the work and have proof that subcontractors and suppliers have been paid before submitting final payment.
Make sure the details of the construction are included in the contract along with the cost breakdown for all materials and a timeframe for completion. Request a signed lien waiver stating that the contractor has been paid in full at the time of final payment.
