We've all heard it: half of all marriages end in divorce.
The truth is a sad realization. Actual divorce rates are only increasing with the times.
According to DivorceRate.org, 50 percent of first marriages end in divorce, while 67 percent of second marriages fail and 74 percent of third marriages fall short of a happy ending.
Many couples divorce for different reasons, but some of the most common include a lack of communication and commitment, financial problems, priority shifts, infidelity, abuse (physical, mental or emotional), disagreement in parenting and unsuccessful resolution skills.
An article in the May 24, 2010 issue of Time Magazine reported 81 percent of college graduates who got married in the 1980s around the age of 26 or older were stilled married 20 years later. Furthermore, only 49 percent of high school graduates who were under the age of 26 when they said their "I dos" made it to their 20th wedding anniversary.
The sad reality is more couples today are looking at divorce as the answer to all their marital problems. IndiaInfo.com suggests some helpful tips to maintain a happy marriage and prevent you and your significant other from becoming a statistic:
• Togetherness: Don't just spend time together, but actually do things like playing cards, dancing, or bowling, at least once a week.
• Compliment: Make an effort to compliment each other. Complimenting makes the other party feel loved and wanted.
• Say "I Love You." These three words will reassure your spouse that despite all the trials from each day, you still love them and appreciate them.
