When the thermometer dips, so can your bank account.

The U.S. Energy Administration expects higher heating bills this winter.

If you use electricity to heat your home, you’ll see the lowest increase. For those who use heating oil, expect to pay 10 percent more than last winter.

Some easy ways to chill your heating bill is to get a programmable thermostat and set it so it only pumps out heat when you’re home. Once it’s set, it can save you money each year without having to think about it every day.

If you spend most of your time in one room, try a space heater. According to Good Housekeeping, setting your thermostat at 62 degrees and putting one in your favorite room can save you $200 per year.

Also, watch those windows. Faulty ones can add 10 to 25 percent to your heating bill.

Also, you can open blinds during the day to catch heat from the sun and close them at dusk to trap it inside.
