"It's an amazing building, it's got a lot of history to it,” San Antonio resident John Titus said. “The make of it, the way it was structured, the outside facade, it's just a beautiful building."

Completed in 1896, the granite and red sandstone structure has grown with the city that surrounds it. For its nearly 12 decades, the courthouse has continued to fulfill its original purpose.

"It's a pretty courthouse. One of the things I'm more amazed about is that it's still functioning. We actually use our courthouse 100% and I think that's pretty amazing,” Golda Obinzu said.

That beautiful architecture made the courthouse the perfect place for the Kidd family to start their lives together.

"We came down here and visited one weekend and we enjoyed it, and I actually loved it so we found the justice of the peace which is right here behind me. We came, tied the knot and that's all my history with the building,” Repreacth Kidd said.

Originally from Chicago, Obinzu works in the courthouse and makes the historic building a destination for visitors.

"When my family would come down, we'd of course do the river walk but we would take them by the courthouse and at least just show them how big our courthouse is, and how unique it is," Obinzu said

Over the years the original building has been expanded several times.

Now the courthouse's size is about to be reduced--an expansion added in the '70s will be removed, restoring the building to its more historically accurate footprint.

"It's been here a long time,” Titus said. “It's a vital part of this city."

Each Valentine's Day, hundreds of couples are married on the steps of the courthouse in several mass weddings that take place throughout the day.
