Classes began Monday at the Hill Country University Center in Fredericksburg.

Students can think of it as a higher education buffet, or a number of programs from several institutions under one roof.

HCUC Executive Director Jimmy Sparks said they're seeing more people enroll from more places.

"We're seeing students that we've never seen before," he said.

Texas Tech University Off Campus Sites Director of Operations Julie Martenson said the facility gives potential students in the Hill Country the opportunity to start or further their education without leaving home.

"It brings the university to their doorstep. Not only that, it makes it more affordable," she said.

Texas Tech, Austin Community College, Concordia and Angelo State all offer courses in Fredericksburg.

"It allows us to work with our community college partners, it allows us to bring in other universities that can provide degree programs that we don't and so it opens up opportunities for students and that's what it's all about," Martenson said.

Sparks said course availability also operates on flexible schedules.

"If you have a job and a family you can work in the day, and you can come to one of our classes in the evening," Sparks said.

The recently completed campus offers state-of-the-art computer and science labs, something that was missing when classes were offered in borrowed space.

"I started when we were still in the high school portables," HCUC student and employee Cecilia Morgado said.

That was when she was working on her first degree. Margado now works at the center while taking classes for a second degree.

"I can commute to and from home and its here," she said.
