The Super Bowl theme carried over to the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Texas. Sunday, they held a tailgating party fundraiser in San Marcos.

There was a talent show for the kids and a chili cook-off for the adults, but the dancing and singing don't show the need that's arisen due to the economy.

“With the downturn of the economy and with many of the foundations and organizations that usually support us, they have supported us at a lower level. I'm not saying they’ve withdrawn total support, but they don't support at the level they used to,” Program Coordinator Daphne McDole said.

This Boys and Girls Club has to work extra hard for money because they service areas between Austin and San Antonio.

"A lot of that territory is overlooked because we are between two major markets, so it's important that we support those kids in those rural communities," McDole said.

While the staff is getting less money, they still help the same amount of kids. For parents like Melinda Banda, the service is invaluable.

"It's positive all around for my children to be around and a part of," Banda said.

It's clear why her son has been coming for almost his entire life.

"It's really a good thing to come here and you meet new people and they are really nice to you," Banda's 11-year-old son Christian Alvarez said.
