City works to expand MetroRail service
Capital MetroRail could soon begin running on weekends.
The City of Austin and Capital Metro are working on a deal that would extend MetroRail service to Friday and Saturday nights until midnight, between Downtown Austin and the Lakeline area.
Currently, the passenger rail only runs during Monday through Friday, with the last run from Downtown to Leander departing at 6:30 p.m. The MetroRail also runs occasionally on special weekends.
Cost is one of the biggest factors being considered. Capital Metro officials told city council members they got an 88 percent return on investment during their special weekend trial runs, which translates into huge demand for the extended service.
If the city and Capital Metro come to an agreement, weekend runs could begin in April.
