The Western Hill area of Temple saw significant damage after a thunderstorm roared through town early Sunday.

“I got out then I realized, ‘Man, there's a lot more damage than I saw at my front door," Temple resident Carl Luepnitz said.

At first, the hard rain, lightning and thunder made it look like a regular thunderstorm, but the storm quickly became worse.

"It was a loud whistling sound and then it just got quiet. Around that time I went to check on my son. He was ok, still sleeping. And that's when I went outside and that's when I saw my neighbor. He was outside and we were looking around at all the damage,” resident Robert Wheat said.

The powerful winds blew over trees and ripped off part of the roof at the Brentwood Apartments. Ten residents were moved to a hotel.

The Temple Fire Department is encouraging everyone to form a plan in case a natural disaster strikes. It can be as easy as clicking here.

"Our taxpayer dollars are going to good use, so we're getting to see a return on them right now." Wheat said. "I'd like to thank the city of Temple and all my neighbors here in the Western Hill community for helping out each other and supporting each other."
