While fireworks are a favorite pastime during the Fourth of July holiday, their explosive sound can send any dog into panic mode.
Officials with the Austin Animal center say they see a drastic increase in intakes and missing animal calls this time of year as dogs try flee the frightening noises.
They say there are a few ways to protect your pet:
• Keep them inside while setting off fireworks
• Give them something to relieve stress (rawhides work well)
• For outdoor pets, ensure fences are secure
The animal experts also stressed the importance of proper identification.
Officials add that you should make sure your dog can be identified just in case. An ID tag with name and contact information will usually do, but a microchip is best as it can’t fall off.
They advise anyone who loses an animal to dial the city’s information line at 311 for assistance.
