This week in Tampa is supposed to be all about the Republicans, but don't tell that to the thousands who descended upon the Sun Dome at the University of South Florida on Sunday to hear from the man they continue to fight for in his bid for the White House.
When Republicans go through the formality of nominating Mitt Romney as their presidential nominee this week in Tampa, there will be Ron Paul supporters in the arena who believe the Republican National Committee has tried to improperly bind all delegates to Romney.
"I’ve been following him for 20 years in Congress and I supported him in ’08,” Teri Angley from Sarasota, Fla. said. “And I still support him today.”
The Paul supporters have distributed an open letter to all Republican delegates, urging them to vote for Paul in that other Tampa arena when the roll call comes.
When the man himself came out to a crowd already fired up after four hours of speakers and videos critical of the current Washington stalemate, Paul brought his familiar message to followers young and old alike who craved to hear it again.
“It’s wonderful to be among friends and with my family and for a good reason: to promote the cause of liberty and a revolutionary spirit,” Paul said.
Legalizing marijuana, bringing troops home from abroad and getting rid of the Fed—just some of the familiar themes that have not changed between suspending his campaign and Sunday's rally designed to capture attention before the Republicans gather all together under another roof.
“They’ve learned how to bend rules, break rules and now they want to rewrite the rules,” Paul said.
And while Paul has previously admitted he doesn't expect to win the nomination based on the delegate count, he was hoping to turn some heads in Tampa.
“There’s a big fight going on and we’re involved in it. A bunch of people are joining us in saying ‘You’ve gone too far. The Ron Paul people are right.”
Also in attendance was Senator Rand Paul, Ron Paul’s son. Rand Paul is scheduled to speak during the Republican National Convention. There will be a video tribute for his father.
