One of the several Congressional races decided Tuesday was the newly crafted House District 35.
Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a familiar face to Central Texas voters, claimed victory over Republican challenger and former San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvais.
And as Congressman Doggett made his way from San Antonio to his home in Austin Tuesday, it was a victory lap that spanned the bulk of his new district.
Doggett says he owes a lot of his success to his hometown supporters.
"People in Travis County had my back and recognized how important it was for me to be out visiting with the folks in the half of the territory that is brand new to me," Rep. Doggett said.
The new territory didn't present much of an obstacle to the long-time congressman. Doggett opened with a strong lead, even on his opponent’s home turf.
"I had a strong opponent with a strong history in Hays County, I respect her, I know it was a hard decision for some people and I really appreciate the vote of confidence in Hays County," the Democratic candidate said.
Susan Narvaiz, spent Tuesday night surrounded by her supporters.
"Just a regular working-class American could live in a country where I could say I want to run for congress and have people embrace that," Narvais said.
The former San Marcos Mayor said she felt called by God to run, and will rely on her faith for the next stage of her life.
Doggett said his victory sends a message to state leaders that the people will chose who represents them, not district maps.
"Rick Perry was just determined to find some way to get rid of me and the people had a little different attitude about it," he said.
The newly-drawn District 35 stretches from parts of Austin down along the Interstate-35 Corridor to San Antonio.
