One person is dead after a car caught fire in East Austin Tuesday morning.
Austin police say a vehicle was traveling eastbound around 7:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Sara Drive near Springdale Road. The driver lost control and crashed into what officers called a “concrete flood water drainage channel” and caught fire.
First responders with the Austin Fire Department extinguished the blaze and discovered one person inside the vehicle, deceased.
Officers say the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, but the morning’s slick roads could be a factor.
“Separate from this fatality, if you have to be out on the roads, please leave a little early, drive with caution,” APD Senior Officer Veneza Bremner said. “It’s slippery--don’t have any distractions in your vehicle. It’s dangerous enough when it’s not raining, it’s definitely a lot more dangerous when the roads are slick and the vehicles are harder to stop and control.”
Anyone who may have information on the accident is asked to call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5594.
This is Austin’s fifth traffic fatality of 2013.
