A burglary call at a North Austin business ended in gunfire early Saturday morning.
When officers arrived at Johnson Supply near MoPac and Highway 183 around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, they spotted a suspect trying to break in to the business, police said.
Investigators said the suspect fled to a car and rammed an officer's car, pinning it against a tree while the officer was trying to get out.
That's when police say the officer open fired, shooting the suspect and his car several times.
While APD has had several officer-involved shootings this year, Chief Art Acevedo says each case is unique.
"Every single incident is taken as a standalone incident and is judged by the totality of the facts, the circumstances and the evidence,” Acevedo said. “It's not a matter of whether there are too many or too little. It's a matter of whether the use of force was lawful."
The suspect was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he is in serious but stable condition.
