Daniel Walker has a bit of an accent. It’s something that helps him stand out.
"One of the children that I represented and advocated for, we started talking about where he was from," Walker said.
But the child wanted to talk more about Walker, his CASA of Travis County volunteer.
"The only other time he heard an English accent was in fairy tales," Walker said.
That's why the child thought Walker was a prince with a castle. In reality, Walker is a father, business owner and a CASA -- a Case Appointed Special Advocate. There are more than 550 others like him.
"There's certainly a lot of sadness when you see what these kids have been through, but there's also a lot of hope because they're in a good program," Walker said.
Out of the 590 cases closed last year, the CASA program helped 60 percent of children in the program return to their families, 21 percent went to live with other relatives, 11 percent were adopted, the other 8 percent either aged out or had other circumstances.
Executive Director Laura Wolf says they need more volunteers to go to court for the kids.
"That means being able to tell a judge, 'Your honor, in this situation for this child, here's the outcome, either short term or long term, that's going to be in this child's best interest,’" Wolf said.
The legal aspect and working with children compelled Walker to become an advocate.
"We consider ourselves to be privileged to work with these children,” Walker said. “It's important work and it needs to be done, but it’s extremely rewarding as well."
Rewarding to use his voice on their behalf, even if he has to explain where it came from.
Volunteers go through 33 hours of training and many of them will be at the CASA Superhero Run on Saturday.
The annual event brings out runners from across the city dressed up as their favorite super heroes.
