People taking advantage of the cool water at Barton Springs Pool will soon notice some changes.
Renovations to Austin's crown jewel will begin just after the Austin City Limits Music Festival wraps up. Most of the updates will be on the grounds and have little impact on the use of the pool.
"We will be replacing the chain link fence that is around the property. We'll be installing a new ticket booth,” Project Manager Robin Camp said. “The electric power lines that are overhead will be buried, so that they'll be safer."
Improvements also include addressing some erosion issues and building a wheelchair-accessible pathway on the south side of the pool.
Austin resident and Barton Springs swimmer Mark Power-Freeman has mastered how to take on the pools’ famous cool temperatures.
"I'm not the type who will come and just jump into it," he said. "It's nice to just take a dip in it, cool off, get out. When you get hot again, dip back in again."
Freeman says now is the perfect time to make some upgrades to his favorite spot.
“Now that it's getting a little bit cooler, maybe pool attendance will not be as great and be less disruptive than if they had done it, say back in July," he said.
There will be limited lawn and deck access during construction, but the project manager says the pool will not shut down.
All the work should be complete by April. Click here to check out the master plan.
