More Austin apartment dwellers can start recycling at home this week. Apartment buildings with more than 50 units must now provide recycling receptacles to residents.
The change is part of a scheduled ramp-up in the number of recycling-friendly apartment buildings in the city, approved in the Universal Recycling Ordinance in 2010.
By 2016, all multi-family properties must provide recycling options.
Specifically, the ordinance requires property owners to provide recycling for a minimum of five materials (paper, No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass, aluminum and cardboard), sufficient container space for the amount of residents, informational signage, regular tenant and employee education and annual recycling plans and record keeping.
