Police say a bank robber tied to an officer-involved shooting this summer is now in custody.
Randall Reed was arrested Tuesday in connection with five bank robberies and one robbery of a grocery store between the months of February and July of this year.
In each robbery, Reed brandished a weapon and even tied up the bank tellers in one. His final robbery was at the Benchmark Bank along 35th Street in Central Austin during the morning of July 26.
About eight hours after that robbery, 32-year-old Larry Eugene Jackson Jr. attempted to enter the bank, but found the doors were locked due to the ongoing investigation.
The detective assigned to that case, Det. Charles Kleinert, stepped outside to speak with Jackson who, after a few minutes of talking, ran away, according to police. In pursuit of Jackson, Kleinert commandeered a civilian vehicle and caught up with him near the entrance of Shoal Creek along 34th Street.
The chase led them beneath a small bridge where Kleinert fired one shot from his service weapon, killing the Jackson.
Kleinert told investigators his weapon had fired accidentally during a brief struggle.
