Under laws passed last legislative session, the Texas Department of Transportation has new tools to collect from toll scofflaws.
TxDOT says about $27 million in unpaid tolls, fees and fines is owed to the state. On Oct.17, the agency is going to release the names of those owing the money to the media and post the list of the worst violators online.
The agency says its targeting people who consistently use the toll roads without paying.
"These are the chronic violators and these, of course, are those who have more than a hundred violations individually," said Mark Cross, of TxDOT.
Some of the violators owe more than $10,000. If they still don't pay up, their vehicles could be impounded. TxDOT is also working with counties to block vehicle registration by the worst offenders.
