A student at Lanier High School shot and killed himself just after noon Tuesday, Austin Independent School District officials confirm.
AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez said the student shot himself in the courtyard of the North Austin campus, located on 1201 Payton Gin Road. The student died on scene.
The school was placed on a brief lockdown following the shooting, but the lockdown was later lifted so students could leave the campus for an early dismissal. Officials say they school will re-open Wednesday.
District spokesman Mike Sanchez said there is an active investigation into how a gun was brought on campus, and added there are no metal detectors at any AISD high schools. He could not comment if other students witnessed the shooting, but did note it was a common area of the school at lunch time. Several social media profiles indicate there were students who saw the event.
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen called the student's death a "tragic loss" at a press conference, saying, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family after this event.”
Carstarphen also urged students, family and staff to seek counseling to cope with the event's aftermath.
There will be counseling services available at the science and health wing of Lanier until 6 p.m. Monday, and will continue throughout the week.
District officials also suggested the community reach out to the Austin Travis County Mobile Outreach Team at (512) 472-HELP.
