The suspect in two San Marcos murders Thursday has been found dead in Comal County, according to San Marcos police.
The body of 23-year-old Daniel Brewster Stillwell was found in his car in Devil’s Backbone. Police say it appears Stillewell drove his car off of a cliff, but his official cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner.
Stillwell is believed to have killed 22-year-old Hailey Nicholls and 26-year-old Jesse Robledo earlier in the day in an apartment at 317 Craddock Avenue in San Marcos.
Police say Stillwell and Nicholls were in a romantic relationship that had recently ended. Stillwell, Nicholls and Robledo all worked at a San Marcos Chipotle restaurant.
Police believe the murder happened in Nicholls’ apartment, and believe Stillwell lived in the same complex.
"When the officers first arrived, they found that the sliding glass door on the back of the apartment complex had been smashed open apparently with a brick and that's the way entry was made into the apartment," San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams said.
Cecilia Rodriguez lives next door. She heard the shots and called police.
"I heard some more what I thought was gun shots and it just got quiet after that and all I heard was a bit of shuffling as the person ran out," she said.
William said it’s the first double homicide in San Marcos in the 10 years he has been chief.
