Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio on Sept. 13, 1987. It was his only stop in Texas and part of his second papal visit to the United States.

During the trip he celebrated Mass at Plaza Guadalupe outside the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The pope also prayed and spoke to students at San Fernando Cathedral.
