A service was held in Downtown Austin Sunday for people of all faiths to come together in remembrance of the September 11th attacks.

Guner Arslan, a practicing Muslim, says his life changed forever that day. He feels he took one hit to his country and another to his faith.

"A lot of female members of our congregation were mostly verbally attacked, which is understandable when you receive a blow like that,” he said. “Some people cannot control themselves so I can't blame them."

Ten years later, the interfaith community gathered at First Baptist Church in Austin to join faiths and commemorate the tragic events of 9/11.

"It's the first step to building peace", Tom Spencer with Interfaith Action of Central Texas said.

Members of different faiths, including Muslim imams and Jewish rabbis, joined hands to spread a message of peace.

"There are a lot of different traditions, but people are all human. Spencer said. “They all feel the same things and there is a tremendous amount of shared grief and sorrow around 9/11 that all of the different faith traditions want to express."

Since September 11th, Arslan said he worked to show the peaceful side of Islam. He is a founding member of the Institute of Interfaith Dialogue.

"I believe it is our duty to show the real part of our religion which is all about peace, understanding and coming together,” Arslan said.

All donations accepted during the event will go to help fire relief efforts in Bastrop County.
