Intern Showcase: Thousands of UT students volunteered last Saturday in an effort to rebuild an Austin neighborhood.
The volunteer service day was called Project 2011. This year's event was the 12th in the annual project series.
Students repainted walls, picked up trash and planted hundreds of new trees across 13 different work sites in the Rundberg Lane area.
This year’s main site was Lanier High School, where the majority of student volunteers lent a helping hand. Felipe Tremino, Lanier’s Parent Specialist, believes the project not only helps restore his community, but also provides students with positive role models.
“I think it is really important that our students use that as something they look up to when they get to college,” Tremino said.
Project 2011 was the largest volunteer day in UT history, with more than 1,500 students participating, topping last year’s mark by more than 100 participants.
