Wranglers are back in the saddle after bye week
While the rest of the Arena Football League competed during Week 9, the Austin Wranglers (3-5) had the week off, marking the midpoint of the team’s 2007 season. In years past, the Wranglers had a Week One bye in their inaugural season in 2004, a Week 17 bye in 2005 and no bye-week in 2006 as the league had an even 18 teams. This year, the players and coaches had the opportunity to take a few days off, but also to begin preparations early for Southern Division rival, the Tampa Bay Storm (2-6).
During the bye-week, the Austin Wranglers traded wide receiver Anthony Hines to the Kansas City Brigade, in exchange for fullback/linebacker Joseph Oniwor. With the Wranglers having depth at the receiver position, Austin needed additional help at the “Mack” linebacker spot due to injuries on defense.

Due to a knee injury suffered during the game against the New Orleans VooDoo, Wranglers “Jack” linebacker Greg Brown underwent surgery to repair the injury. The typical recovery time for the injury is approximately six months, so he will be unable to play in the remaining games this season. Brown will be placed on injured reserve this week.
Filling in for Brown during the majority of the VooDoo game at “Jack” linebacker and used at wide receiver was Sakeen Wright. He will continue to work at that position while also earning some time on offense as well. For his performance in Week 8 against New Orleans, Wright earned the AFL’s Ironman of the Week honors.
Following a four-month recovery process for an injured shoulder, former Texas Longhorn quarterback Chance Mock will re-sign with the Wranglers to the team’s practice squad.
Mock (6-2, 220, Texas), in his second AFL season, played in six games in 2006, going 4-of-7 for 33 yards and one touchdown through the air. Also used in short yardage running situations, he dashed for 12 yards on seven carries and four touchdowns.
Mock joins defensive back Quincy Stewart on the practice squad. Both players can be signed to the team’s active roster at any point and can also be claimed by another AFL team if there is interest.
To make room for the addition of Oniwor, the Wranglers waived fullback/linebacker Akarika Dawn.
