City of Austin officials announced the disc golf course at Pease Park will close for good in December. The move is part of a restoration project being done by the Watershed Protection Department.

According to officials, the sport is not good for the ecology of the park. They say when the discs hit the trees, it causes damage. The project is aimed to restore Pease Park to its natural state.

The Parks and Recreation Department is working with disc golf associations to setup an alternative site.

"A lot of disc golfers are not happy with the relocation, but a lot of community groups and associations are very happy with it," Parks and Recreation spokesman Victor Ovalle said.

Some of those people that aren't happy with it think closing the park shouldn't be the only option.

"We shouldn't ruin the environment just for our enjoyment, but I think that there's other ways to go around it than just closing the park, like building bridges or maybe creating different paths and putting the baskets in different places," disc golfer Natalia Wasko said. "But I don't think the only option is to close the park.

The City of Austin will be holding a community stakeholder meeting at 6:30 p.m. on June 17.
