"I'm excited for Garrett to finally be able to step into his own and show what he has," said Longhorns defensive tackle Kheeston Randall.

The last time Gilbert took the field was on the biggest stage in college football.
Despite the outcome, he gained a lot of experience in those 49 minutes.

"The biggest thing for me was just the confidence of being able to know that I can do it, or that we can do it as an offense. The biggest thing I learned was protect the ball a little better," said Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

"We all saw him mature, quarter by quarter. I'm sure ya'll saw it during the game. He's done the same thing in the offseason; matured as a leader, stepped up as a leader. I'm excited to see him play this year," said Longhorns defensive end Sam Acho.

Garrett Gilbert is the unquestioned leader of this team, but there's one piece of advice Colt McCoy gave him at the National Championship game he won't soon forget.

"What Colt told me himself is you can't try to be like anybody else. I just have to be myself, and be my own player, and be my own quarterback. I think offensively we're going to be fine. I have so many talented athletes, talented playmakers around me. If I can just get the ball to them, they're going to make the plays with the ball. We're going to be fine," said Gilbert.

Spoken like a leader already.
