While much of the city was still sleeping, about 6,000 runners geared up early Sunday morning for a race.
The 3M Half Marathon took runners from North Austin through the city into Downtown, finishing up at the intersection of 17th Street and Congress Avenue.
Scott Rantall took first place in the men's competition with a finishing time of 67 minutes.
“I've been running with a couple of guys that have qualified for U.S. trials,” he said. “Just training them gave me the strength to pull forward and I got a lead at about two miles to go, so I'm very happy with the way it turned out."
It was just 35 degrees at the 6:45 a.m. start of the race. That could be considered brisk for some, but for most runners, it was just right.
"I can race pretty well in the heat because you kind of have to in Austin,” Kelly Wilson, women’s first place finisher, said. “But I do prefer cool weather so yeah I love it, it was absolutely perfect."
The 3M Half Marathon raised $30,000 for Communities in Schools, a nonprofit which provides specialized staff to schools to help students overcome learning barriers.
