ARLINGTON -- Texas manager Ron Washington has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season after leading the Rangers to consecutive World Series.

The Rangers announced the extension Monday.

Washington has a 427-373 record in five seasons with Texas, his first major league managerial job. He is the first manager in major league history to increase his team's win total in four consecutive seasons after his initial season with a club.

The Rangers had never won a playoff series in their franchise history before winning the last two American League pennants. They lost last season's World Series to St. Louis in seven games after the Giants beat them in five games in 2010.

Only five active managers have been with their current teams longer than Washington.
