More than 100 amateur boxers took to the ring Wednesday night for the third annual
Golden Gloves tournament.
The three-day single elimination tournament spotlights the best boxers in the State of Texas.
The tournament features a number of different weight classes for both guys and girls, ranging from ages 16 to 34.
Corey Molina has fought before, but never in front of judges and never in front of hundreds of people.
"I have always loved the sport of boxing, and this is one of those things that I have always wanted to do. I finally got the opportunity to do it and once I started training, I loved it and realized that I wanted to take it to the next step and compete in Golden Gloves," Molina said.
Coach Don Spencer carefully wraps his fighters’ hands with gauze. It’s something he’s done hundreds of times before. Spencer trains fighters at Lords Boxing gym in North Austin. In the tournament, the gym is featuring 11 fighters and Molina is the only first timer.
"They get in, they start training and they start getting themselves in shape. They want to take that next step, and once you try it out, you like it," Spencer said. "He is going to be like a deer in headlights. He won't even remember that first round, I can almost guarantee it."
The tournament features about two dozen bouts a night. Champions of the three day event go on to compete in state and then to nationals.
Molina hopes when it is all said and done, he’s the one raising his hand in victory.
The event is about more than just a good fight. Last year, Golden Gloves raised just under $20,000. This year, the money will benefit Meals on Wheels and More and the Travis County Sheriffs Law Enforcement Association Youth Scholarship Fund.
The tournament ends Friday night.
